Up until a relatively short time ago, (20-30 years) most people knew next to nothing about Croatia. One of the newly formed Balkan nations emerging from the ruin of the defunct, communist Yugoslavia.
Unfortunately one of the few things that people do know about Croatia is that it was part of a short but brutal and ugly civil war in the late 90’s. While it’s still something of a taboo subject in country (there was a lot of death, suffering, betrayal, and anger) and there are still more than a few places in poorer regions on the outskirts where the scars of war are still very visible, for the most part all of that is in the past and the people of Croatia are very much looking to the future and wanted to share the beauty of culture of their country with the world.
