Swampy Fun with Blue Curaçao.
Spring in Southern California is a lot like summer everywhere else. As the weather warms up and the sun is shinning, it\’s time to start thinking about those lovely late spring early summer cocktails. Here is one I’m tentatively calling Swampy Fun. While that might sound right, I think you like it.
- Cucumber shaved and sliced.
- 1 ½ ounce Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin
- ½ ounce Blue Curaçao
- 1 lemon wedge, Squeezed
- ½ ounce agave syrup
Prep a rocks glass with the shaved cucumbers and then fill with ice.
In cocktail shaker add the gin, Curaçao, cucumber slices, lemon juice, and agave. Muddle and then add ice. Shake vigorously and then strain into the prepared glass. Enjoy.
Blue Curaçao is a triple sec liqueur made from the peels of Lahara oranges. Lahara oranges are a mutant descendant of Seville Oranges. They are too bitter and fibrous to eat, but the peels are potently aromatic, and it is the peels used to make the liqueur. Oddly, these oranges are not actually orange but green.
The Senior & Co. distillery claims to be the original distillers of mas produced Curaçao. The Curaçao featured in the video comes from Hiram Walker. Hiram Walker was purchased in 2023 by Pernod Richard.
The blue in blue Curaçao comes from a food coloring and is not natural but very pretty. No one knows for sure when or who added the blue to Curaçao, but Bols, who started producing their own version in the 1920’s claims to have been the first documented version of blue Curaçao.
